ADR investigates the feasibility of PCB removal for cleaner and local sourcing of Rare Earth Elements (REEs). We predict that REEs will be a strategically sensitive and competitive area in manufacturing. This is not unlike the situation with the acquisition of Precious Metals (PMs), also from domestic recycling; particularly from consumer electronics products.

ADR begins a new privately funded project investigating component recycling within the automotive sector. Issues include design for repair, refurbishment and reuse, systems process control (SPC), meantime before failure (MBF) and quality versus profitability ratios. The work is valued at over $0.5M.

ADR is in talks with business development professionals including product development engineers and designers for its first North American network. The partnership aims to explore new product development within the automotive, consumer electronics and furniture sectors.

ADR forges partnership with the Technical Institute (TU) of Berlin. Mechanical engineers from TU Berlin have stong links with automotive OEMs and expertise in disassembly methodology while ADR are the inventors and world leaders in ADSM technology. Together they aim to have further developed Active Disassembly mechanisms for consumer electronics including the automotive sector.

1st March 2004

ADR starts its EU Framework 6 project today. The project investigates the re-use and recycling of LCD products for compliance for the EU take-back WEEE Legislation. The project has a 2-year duration and is worth 1.5 Million Euros. The project has a substantial user group, including Apple, Sony, Matsushita, Nokia, Flextronics, EARN (Stena, Indumetal, Electrocycling, Coolrec), LG, Samsung and Hitachi Displays.

ADR forms a partnership with Active Recycling Ltd in the total mobile phone recycling industry through various R&D projects and electronics recycling schemes. They currently have technology development projects with Japanese manufacturers and EU recyclers.

Dr. Joseph Chiodo receives the world's first PhD in Active Disassembly using Smart Materials (ADSM) from Brunel University's Department of Design. He supervised the only other PhD in the field, Dr. Nick Jones, also a Brunel Graduate, the following year. Other PhD students led by Dr. Chiodo include Habib Hussein (candidate), currently developing a strand of a related technology for a company Joseph founded in 2003.

Joseph Chiodo (& Brunel University) is granted the 3.5 year EU framework 5 collaborative research project based on his (ADSM) Phd, worth 2.9 Million Euros. Joseph becomes the EU Co-ordinator for his international research team including Motorola, Nokia, Sony, Gaiker, Indumetal, IKP and Brunel University

Joseph Chiodo receives the highest research rating granted by the EU SCARE panal; 'A' rating for his bid propal to the EU. He gives the contract to his Ph.D. supervisors for academic affiliation for acceptance of the 3.5 year EU framework 5 collaborative research project based on his (ADSM) Phd.

Joseph authors pan EU bid and syndicates Motorola, Nokia, Sony, Gaiker, Indumetal, IKP and Brunel University in a 3.5 year EU framework 5 collaborative research project based on his (ADSM) Phd. Joseph Chiodo formally writes the bid proposal to the EU largely through his own efforts. He contributes an undisclosed amount towards the bid proposal.

Joseph Chiodo (& Brunel University) receives 100K GBP from The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the UK for R&D in his ADSM technology venture for investigation of Design Principles for Active Disassembly.

Brunel University stops funding of ADSM tecnology and abandons interest into Active Disassembly. Joseph Chiodo formally writes bid proposals to the EPSRC & DTI. He contributes an undisclosed amount towards the development of patents and bid proposals whilst doing his Ph.D.


June 1997

Joseph Chiodo advises both ICSID in Toronto Canada and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the UK about his ADSM technology through official government innovation (EPSRC) reporting and conference paper presentation (ICSID 1997).

Joseph Chiodo creates the ADSM technology development group. Active Disassembly and associated technologies is incorporated within the teaching syllabus in Technology Awareness at Brunel University's Department of Design.

Design for Disassembly and related end-of-life strategies, including Active Disassembly are developed from theoretical concepts into working models by Joseph Chiodo of ADR. Joseph starts lecturing around the world on the topic advising numerous companies, governments and academia.
